How it works

Seven letters sit in a honeycomb, one in the middle. Make as many words as you can: four letters or more, always with the middle letter, letters used as often as you like. A word with all seven is a pangram. Climb from Egg to Golden bee in today’s hive, race the clock for the leaderboard, or play friends, in 11 languages.

  • Make words of four letters or more from the hive’s seven letters. Every word needs the middle one; letters can repeat.
  • A four-letter word is 1 point; longer words a point a letter. A pangram uses all seven letters and scores 7 more.
  • Your rank climbs with the share of the hive’s points you find, from Egg to Golden bee, which takes every word.
  • Today’s hive is the same for everyone and has no clock. A timed hive gives you three minutes for the leaderboard.

What is BeeBoo?

BeeBoo is our word hive. Seven letters sit in a honeycomb, one of them in the golden cell in the middle. Make as many words as you can from them: every word has four letters or more, uses only the hive’s letters – each as often as you like – and always has the middle letter in it. A word that uses all seven letters is a pangram, and every hive hides at least one.

Each word scores, longer words score more, and your rank climbs from Egg to Golden bee as you find a bigger share of the hive’s points.

A seven letter word puzzle and daily word game, free in your browser

The honeycomb word game is a much-loved daily word puzzle: seven letters, one fixed in the middle, and the hunt for the pangram. BeeBoo gives you a new hive every day, the same for everyone, plus a Timed hive of three minutes with a leaderboard. It comes in eleven word languages, and each has its own word list, made for that language from its common words, not translated from English.

It is free in your browser, with no sign-up and nothing to install. Each word language has its own leaderboard for the Timed hive, with Today, Week, Month and All time views, and in Duo and Group rooms friends join with a code or a link and race the same hive. BeeBoo comes in light and dark and works with a keyboard, a mouse or a touch screen.

Who it suits and what it trains

BeeBoo suits anyone who likes crosswords, anagrams and word games, and anyone who wants a calm daily word puzzle with their morning coffee: today’s hive has no clock, so you can come back to it all day. It trains vocabulary and spelling, and the knack of seeing words inside a jumble of letters. Playing in another word language is a good way to practise one you are learning.

Good to know

Which word forms count depends on the word language. English takes every form: plurals, -ed and -ing. Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, German and Polish take dictionary forms and the plurals of nouns. Turkish, Azerbaijani, Russian and Indonesian take dictionary forms only, with Turkish verbs ending in -mak or -mek and Azerbaijani ones in -maq or -mək. Accents a language treats as optional are folded, so é types e in French; letters of their own, such as Turkish ş or German ü, are never folded. The words are common words from open frequency lists, checked against Wiktionary and open spelling dictionaries, never names, abbreviations or rude words.

How to play BeeBoo

Make words from the seven letters of the hive, always with the middle one, and find the pangram that uses them all. Today’s hive has no clock; a Timed hive gives you three minutes for the leaderboard. You can play with a keyboard, a mouse or a touch screen.

The goal: find the words in the hive

Find as many words as you can in the hive’s seven letters. A word needs four letters or more, may use only the hive’s letters – each as often as you like – and must have the golden middle letter in it. In today’s hive you aim to climb the ranks and, one day, find every word; in a Timed hive you aim for the most points in three minutes.

How a game of BeeBoo goes

  1. On the start screen, choose Solo, pick the Word language, choose Today’s hive or Timed hive under Hive, and press Play solo.
  2. In today’s hive the letters are there at once. In a Timed hive, press Start: the letters show after a count of 3, 2, 1, and the three-minute clock starts.
  3. Type a word on your keyboard or tap the cells. The word builds up above the hive, the middle letter in gold; a letter the hive doesn’t have shows faded.
  4. Press Enter. If the word counts, a bubble says how many points it scored and it goes into your list of found words, in alphabetical order.
  5. If it doesn’t count, the word shakes and the bubble says why: too short, a letter that isn’t in the hive, the middle letter missing, a word you already found, or a word that is not in our list.
  6. Press Shuffle (the round arrows) whenever you’re stuck: the six outer letters move to new places and the middle one stays.
  7. Keep going. The rank bar beside the hive fills as your points grow and tells you how many points the next rank needs.

Scoring and ranks

A four-letter word scores 1 point. A longer word scores a point for each letter, so a five-letter word scores 5 and a seven-letter word 7. A pangram, a word with all seven letters, scores 7 points more: an eight-letter pangram is worth 15.

Your rank depends on the share of the hive’s points you have found – the points of every word it hides added together. You start as an Egg; Larva comes at 2 %, Hatchling at 6 %, Worker at 12 %, Forager at 20 %, Honey maker at 30 %, Busy bee at 42 % and Hive hero at 60 %. Golden bee is only for finding every word. In a hive worth 355 points, Forager starts at 71 and Hive hero at 213.

Every pangram raises a small cheer, and so does every rank from Forager up.

The leaderboards

Only the Timed hive goes on a leaderboard: when the three minutes are up, your points go on it under your player name. Each word language has its own board – BeeBoo for English, BeeBoo · Türkçe, BeeBoo · Deutsch and so on – with one entry per player, their best, and views for Today, Week, Month and All time. A Timed hive with no words in it sends nothing.

Today’s hive is not ranked: it is the same hive for everyone, so it is there to enjoy and to share.

How the game ends

A Timed hive ends when the three minutes are up, or sooner if you find every word. The result card shows your points and rank, how many of the hive’s words you found, your pangrams and your best score, and then every word of the hive: the ones you found in gold, the ones you missed in outline, pangrams in bold. Press Play again for a new hive, Share result, or open the leaderboard. To give up a hive and take a new one, press New hive (and again within three seconds when it asks “Sure? Tap again”).

Today’s hive has no end but the last word: you can stop and come back to it all day, even after a reload, and when you find every word the result card opens. Share result copies a line with your rank, points and words, and a new hive comes at midnight UTC.

Controls

  • Keyboard: type the letters, Enter sends the word, Backspace (or Delete) takes back the last letter, and Space shuffles. The keys work from anywhere on the page.
  • Accents a language treats as optional type the plain letter: é gives e in French, á gives a in Spanish.
  • Mouse: click the cells to type, then the Delete, Shuffle and Enter buttons under the hive.
  • Touch: tap the cells; a letter types the moment your finger touches it. Delete, Shuffle and Enter sit under the hive.
  • With Tab you can also step through the cells and press Enter or Space on one to type its letter.
  • On a phone, your list of found words folds into one line with the count and your latest words; tap it to open the whole list.

Solo, Duo and Group

Solo is today’s hive, untimed and the same for everyone, or a Timed hive of three minutes for the leaderboard of your word language.

Duo is two players and Group is three to eight. On the start screen, choose the mode and the Word language and press Play duo or Play with a group to open a room. Share its code or press Copy link, and the host presses Start round once everyone is in.

Everyone gets the same hive. After a 3-second count all the clocks start together, and the round runs for four minutes. The players list shows everyone’s points and word count, never their words. The round ends when everyone’s time is up or they have found every word. Most points win; on a tie, more words, then whoever reached their score sooner. The result shows every word of the hive with the initials of who found it, and the host deals a new hive for the next round. Room games don’t go on the leaderboard.

Tips for the word hive

  • Start with the middle letter and build out: put it at the start, the end and in between, and see which short words appear.
  • Look for the endings and beginnings your language loves. In English, try -ing, -ed, -er and -s, and re- or un- in front, when the hive has their letters.
  • Hunt the pangram early: it is worth at least 14 points. Look for a long word that can take all seven letters, often a common ending on a longer stem.
  • Once you find a word, try its family: plural, past, -er. In English each form counts on its own.
  • Press Shuffle when your eyes get stuck. The same letters in new places show you words you missed.
  • Letters repeat as often as you like, so try doubling them: TENANT and LINEN use the same N twice.
  • In a Timed hive, don’t stare at one hard word: send the quick ones you see, since even a point each adds up, and come back to the long ones.

Questions and answers

Why doesn’t my word count?
The bubble over the word tells you: it is shorter than four letters, uses a letter that isn’t in the hive, is missing the middle letter, was found already, or isn’t in our list. The lists hold common words only, never names or abbreviations, and in some word languages only dictionary forms count.
Is BeeBoo free?
Yes. It is free in your browser, with no download and no sign-up.
Is there a new hive every day?
